In recent years the University of Bristol has been very successful in attracting funding (>?75M) to establish a large number (12) of centres for doctoral training (CDTs). The Faculty of Science at the University of Bristol is rated 3rd in the UK, and therefore as one of the UK’s leading centres for graduate training and research.  Here opportunities are discussed for graduate research (PhD and MSc), training (through various centres for doctoral training affiliated with the School of Chemistry), and for exchange between Jilin University and the University of Bristol.

Opportunities for Research and Training in Nanomaterials at the University of Bristol

The Bristol Centre for Functional Nanomaterials (BCFN) is a community of over 60 students and 100 academics from 15 departments of the University of Bristol, including Chemistry, Physics, Biology, Engineering and Medicine for example. The BCFN operates a 1-year Masters programme and a 4-year PhD programme, and the students benefit from expert skills training which supports their research.

The BCFN interdisciplinary research themes cover all areas of Functional Materials, with a focus on understanding materials at the nanoscale, and how this fundamental knowledge can lead to more effective applications in industry and in society. We support international cooperation and exchange, and have active involvement with industry in both training and research.

In my talk I will introduce the BCFN and how it works, and give examples of the types of research project that are available. I will also briefly describe the opportunities in related Centres of Doctoral Training in the School of Physics in the University of Bristol.

PhD Training at the Bristol Chemical Synthesis Centre for Doctoral Training

The Bristol Chemical Synthesis Centre for Doctoral Training is a 4-year PhD programme at the University of Bristol. Students spend the first 7-months of their PhD exploring different areas of synthetic chemistry and enhancing their transferable skills, before deciding on a PhD project. Transferable skills training is also emphasised during the remainder of the programme, with various courses being run throughout the PhD.

During my presentation, I will introduce the BCS CDT, highlighting the opportunities and benefits, as well as summarise some of the research that is carried out by students in the Centre.
