Lei Fang obtained his PhD degree from Northwestern University in 2010, before he became a postdoctoral scholar at Stanford. He started his independent career as an assistant professor at Texas A&M University in 2013. Lei is the recipient of 2011 IUPAC young chemist prize honorable mention award, 2011 Chinese government scholarship for outstanding students studying abroad, Ryan Fellowship of Northwestern University, and 2014 ACS PRF new doctoral investigator. Despite in a still early stage of his career, Lei has authored more than 30 peer-reviewed publications, which have been cited for more than 1000 times.

This lecture describes tow examples of molecular engineer approaches to functional mechanically interlocked polymers and semiconducting polymers (See Figure). In the first example, a linear macromolecule that contracts and expands in response to external stimuli was constructed from mechanically interlocked structures. In the second example, side-chain engineering was employed in fine-tuning the balance of processability and photovoltaic performance of conjugated polymer. Overall, it is anticipated that understanding of the fundamental structure-property relationship of polymers could inspire the design of materials with exotic properties and functions on the basis of chemical synthesis and molecular engineering tools.
