Abstract:

"Complex molecular and supramolecular systems are an intriguing playground for the discovery of new species and new interactions, but also a potentially very broadly useful platform for the facile production of value-added chemicals, development of new reactions, and remediation of environmental issues. This presentation will highlight our work on kinetically controlled self-sorting of complex reaction mixtures. In this protocol, a mixture of as many as 25 compounds can be reduced in complexity to just 5 species which can be produced in high yields and high purities. Using this approach, we have demonstrated that multiple industrially useful compounds can be produced in a single reactor, opening up new directions for basic chemical, fragrance, and biofuels industry. In a related protocol, we have used complex libraries of extensively fluorinated molecules to prepare porous metal-organic frameworks based on extensively fluorinated nuclei. These unprecedented materials have high affinities for hydrocarbons and fluorocarbons, but essentially no affinity for water."

Biography:

"Ognjen ?. Miljani? was born in Belgrade, then Yugoslavia, in 1978. He holds a Diploma (2000) from the University of Belgrade and a PhD (2005) from the University of California at Berkeley, the latter earned in the group of Prof. Peter Vollhardt. Following a 2005–2008 postdoctoral stay at UCLA with Sir Fraser Stoddart, Ognjen joined the University of Houston (UH) as an Assistant Professor. His research interests include dynamic combinatorial libraries, metal–organic frameworks and organic fluorophores. He is the recipient of the 2012 NSF CAREER and UH Teaching Excellence awards, and a 2013 Cottrell Scholar of the Research Corporation for Science Advancement."
